USS MAINE HIT BY SPAIN!
On the night February 15, Spain hit one of the United State's warships, the USS Maine. At 9:40 PM, Followers of "the Butcher," General Weyler, attacked the ship in Havana harbor. They hit the ship right where the 5 tons of gunpowder was located. The ship and the sailors had caused no disturbances. In fact, the sailors were ordered not to leave it. The Spanish brutes intended to cause damage and they succeeded. 252 men were killed along with 8 more that died ashore. There has never been such a time for War. This has not been the first disrespectful action against our country. The de Lome letter was published not too long ago.
(Above is one of many political cartoons calling for war against Spain. This was done by a local.)
